Waist and inside leg form a two-dimension grid, so the size count multiplies. Six waists in three lengths is eighteen size lines per style per colourway, not nine, and every cell is a separate stock line with its own residual. Sampling should not multiply with it: sample the base cell and the cells that test the grade at its limits.

Classic, regular, slim and relaxed mean nothing until the brand publishes the finished garment chest, waist, hem, sleeve and body length each one delivers at a given size. In a size set, a fault present at every size belongs to the base pattern or construction, and a fault that grows steadily away from the base belongs to a grade increment.

## 01Menswear sizes are usually published as measurements

A menswear label names a dimension far more often than it names a code. A shirt carries a collar measurement. A jacket carries a chest measurement. Trousers carry a waist and an inside leg. The figure on the ticket is not an abstract position in a sequence; it names a part of the body or a part of the garment, and a customer with a tape measure can check it before ordering.

This is the first thing that does not transfer from womenswear. A women’s size is normally a code. It refers to a body chart the brand holds privately, it has no fixed meaning outside that brand, and a customer cannot verify it against herself without the chart. The menswear convention exposes the underlying dimension instead, which changes what the size chart is for and what the grade rule has to protect.

A measured label has to be explicit about what the measurement refers to. A collar figure normally describes the finished garment, taken along the collar band with the button fastened. A chest figure on a jacket normally describes the body it is cut to fit, and the garment itself measures more by the design ease. Two figures on the same label can therefore be two different kinds of fact, and a chart that does not say which is which will generate returns from customers who measured correctly.

It works the same way here, so the point to carry into menswear is narrower: label the type of every published figure, and give each one a stated point and method of measure so the same tape produces the same number twice.

An illustrative trouser range: each waist option is offered in two inseams. Keep the product and colour constant so the two size dimensions are clear. The letters are placeholders, not size standards.

## 02A measured size moves the selection decision to the customer

A collar measurement helps someone compare an unfamiliar shirt, but it cannot establish chest, sleeve or body fit on its own. A familiar medium label is also only a starting point. Publishing the dimensions and fit intent gives customers better evidence than either label alone and can prevent avoidable size exchanges.

It only works if the brand publishes the figures. A measured size with no chart behind it is a code with a misleading name, and it invites a customer to assume a relationship that the pattern may not hold. It changes what a customer service reply can be, too. Where sizes are codes, a fit question can only be answered with a recommendation. Where they are measurements, it can be answered against a garment the customer already owns and can measure flat on a table.

A measured size is only an advantage once the measurements are published.

## 03Decide which styles carry measured sizes and which carry letters

The measured convention does not cover a whole range. Knitwear, outerwear, jersey and most soft casual tops still run on lettered sizes, so a menswear range normally operates two systems at once: measured sizes on shirting, tailoring and trousers, letters on everything that stretches or hangs loose.

The split is not arbitrary. A measured size is worth publishing where the garment is close enough to the body that a small difference is felt, and where the material will not absorb an error. A stretch jersey top forgives a wide band of chest measurements, so dividing that band into six named sizes creates stock lines without creating fit. A woven shirt forgives very little at the neck, so the collar earns its own figure.

Make the decision while the range is being planned. It determines how many sizes each style carries, which determines the size count for the buy, and it changes what the grade rule has to control. A style moved from letters to measured sizes after the pattern is cut needs its grade rewritten, not extended.

Where both systems appear in one range, keep them legible to the same customer. A lettered size should have its underlying chest measurement published beside it, so the customer who knows their chest from the shirting can place themselves in the knitwear without guessing. The two systems then describe one body instead of two.

## 04Grade tops from the chest and trousers from the waist

A menswear size system often uses chest for tops or waist for trousers as a primary dimension. Neck, seat, height, back width and lengths still need their own controls. Build those relationships from the intended body chart and fit evidence; they cannot safely be inferred from one girth or one fixed ratio.

Body proportions vary within menswear as well as womenswear. Two people with the same chest can have different waists, shoulders and posture; two with the same waist can need different seats and rises. The block and grade need to state the proportions being served and test them on the intended customers.

Consistency comes from a shared body chart, clear fit definitions and repeated fittings across styles. A familiar chest size does not guarantee that every top will fit the same way: silhouette, ease and material change the finished garment. Explain those differences while keeping the underlying sizing method consistent.

What it costs is the illusion that grading has become arithmetic. Sleeve length, body length, shoulder width, neck and armhole depth each need a stated increment, and several of them should move at a different rate to the chest or not move at all. Grading every dimension from one girth by one multiplier produces garments that are correctly sized and wrongly proportioned at both ends of the range.

Write the rule as a list of controlled dimensions with an increment against each, including the ones set to zero. A dimension deliberately held constant is a decision and can be defended at the fitting. A dimension left off the list is an accident that surfaces in the size set, by which point samples have been made against it.

## 05Shoulder slope, back width and drop carry the block difference

A men’s block is not a re-proportioned women’s block, and four differences do most of the work of separating them.

Shoulder slope

Choose shoulder slope from the intended fit bodies. An inherited slope that does not match them can create drag between the neck and sleeve head.

Back width

Across-back must support the intended wearer and forward reach. Too narrow a back can restrict movement even when chest circumference meets the specification.

Chest-to-waist drop

Define the difference between chest and waist for the intended body chart. Whether this drop stays constant or changes across sizes must be established from the fit population.

Body shaping

Place body shaping according to silhouette, posture and the intended fit population. Side seams, centre back and darts are design choices to test, not fixed rules for every menswear block.

The drop deserves a decision, not an inherited number. An unsuitable drop can make one end of the range too shaped through the waist and another too straight, even when the garment meets its specification. Decide how the drop behaves across the range from the body chart and size-set fittings.

Less shaping through the body has a second consequence worth planning for. Fewer seams means fewer places for a fault to hide, so a wrong shoulder slope or a shallow armhole shows as visible drag across the chest and blade at the first fitting, on a garment whose specification passes. Read the fault as a pattern relationship before adjusting the dimension it happens to appear next to. ## 06Control collar, chest, sleeve and body length separately

Shirting is where the dimension-led convention is most fully developed, and it controls four measurements independently because each of them fails in its own way and none of them can stand in for another.

Collar

Governs comfort and closure at the neck, and it is the figure most customers already know about themselves. It is normally published as a finished garment measurement.

Chest

Governs the silhouette through the body and carries the fit intent, so it is the dimension a named fit is defined against.

Sleeve length

Governs where the cuff sits against the hand and under a jacket sleeve. It is the dimension a customer judges without measuring anything.

Body length

Governs whether the shirt stays tucked or works untucked. That is a style decision before it is a measurement, and it is the one most often left undecided until a sample looks short.

Body length carries a hidden dependency. If the shirt is intended to be worn untucked, its length is read against the wearer’s hip and seat, which do not grade at the same rate as the chest. A body length graded straight off the chest increment leaves the largest sizes short at the back and the smallest looking like a tunic. Decide the intended finished position first, then derive the increment from that position.

## 07Sleeve length accumulates three graded movements

Sleeve length is the shirting dimension most often got wrong at grade, and the reason is structural. It is not a single pattern piece measurement. Taken the way the chart normally publishes it, it runs from the neck point across the shoulder, down the arm and to the cuff edge, so it accumulates three separate graded movements: the shoulder point travelling outwards as the chest grows, the armhole deepening, and the sleeve itself lengthening.

A rule that increments all three generously compounds them. The derived large sizes arrive with cuffs past the knuckle while the specification insists they are correct, because the specification was checked against the sleeve pattern rather than against the published measurement. Grade against the figure the chart publishes, and reconcile it with the pattern nest afterwards.

Then check it on a body, because this is the dimension a customer notices without measuring anything. The cuff sits against the hand and, under tailoring, against a jacket sleeve. A small error reads as a badly made shirt, not a size problem, and it is attributed to the brand instead of to the fit.

Decide early whether sleeve length is offered as its own axis or absorbed into the collar size. Absorbing it means one sleeve length per collar, which is simpler to stock and accepts that tall and short customers in the same collar are served approximately. Offering it means a grid, and a grid behaves the way the next two sections describe.

## 08A waist and inside leg grid multiplies the size count

Trousers are conventionally sold on two dimensions at once. Waist selects the size, inside leg selects the length, both appear on the label and a customer expects to specify both. This is the most useful convention in menswear for the customer and the most expensive one for a founder, and those are the same fact seen from two sides.

The count multiplies. Six waists offered in three leg lengths is eighteen size lines per style per colourway, not nine. Every cell is a separate stock line with its own demand, its own reorder decision and its own end-of-season residual. Two colourways doubles it again.

A second sizing axis multiplies the range. It does not extend it.

Demand across the grid is uneven, but its shape depends on the customer. A brand serving shorter or taller people may find its strongest demand away from the centre. Use customer measurements, enquiries and early sales to plan the allocation. Opening every cell without that evidence can tie up cash in the wrong sizes while the sizes people want sell out. Sampling does not have to multiply the same way, and it should not be allowed to. Sample the base cell and the cells that test the grade at its limits, then derive the rest and prove them at the size set. Sampling every cell buys very little additional evidence for a large amount of sample cost and calendar time.

## 09Set the grid width before the sample plan and the buy

Three approaches hold the commitment down, and each trades a different thing.

Offer one leg length and finish it long with an unfinished hem. This passes the length decision to the customer and their alterations tailor, removes the second axis from the buy entirely, and suits a trouser whose position can carry the expectation of alteration. It does not suit a casual trouser bought to wear the same week.

Offer length as an axis on core styles only and run seasonal styles single-length. This keeps the grid where repeat demand justifies the stock and avoids opening it on styles that will not be repeated. It requires the range plan to distinguish core from seasonal at the outset, which is worth doing anyway.

Or reduce to two lengths and publish the finished inside leg for each, so a customer chooses knowingly instead of hoping. Two lengths cover a large share of the intended customers when both are chosen against that customer instead of placed symmetrically around an average.

Any of the three is defensible. What matters is that the choice is made before the sample plan is written, because the grade rule, the sample count and the buy all depend on it, and because a grid narrowed after samples exist wastes the samples. ## 10Publish what classic, regular, slim and relaxed mean as measurements

Fit names carry no information on their own. Slim at one brand is regular at another and tailored at a third, and a customer arriving from elsewhere has no way to convert. The words are useful only at the moment the brand publishes what each one means: the finished garment chest, waist, hem, sleeve and body length that the named fit delivers at a given size.

Published that way, a fit name becomes a promise about a specific difference. A customer learns it once and reuses it for every subsequent order, which is the behaviour a direct brand depends on. Left undefined, the same words invite the customer to import a definition from whichever brand taught it to them, and the brand then absorbs the returns from a mismatch it never stated.

Treat a fit name as a block, because that is what it is. Two fits means two blocks, or one block with a defined and consistently applied difference through the body and sleeve. Either way it is a development commitment that doubles the fitting work on every style offering both, and it doubles the size lines those styles carry into the buy.

Decide how many fits the range carries before pattern work starts. A fit added after a sample comes back too close to the body is not a fit, it is a correction given a name, and it will not be reproducible next season because nothing was written down about what made it different.

A fit name is a block, a set of published measurements and a commitment to repeat both.

## 11Hold the fit definition as a controlled document

Fit consistency across seasons is what produces a repeat customer. Selling direct depends on a second purchase made without trying anything on, and that happens only when a shirt bought next year in the same fit measures the same as this year’s.

So the fit definition needs a version and an owner, the same as a specification. Changing it is a deliberate decision made for a stated reason and announced to the customer, because a customer who has learned the fit has effectively memorised a measurement and will discover a silent change by wearing it.

The common way a fit drifts is procedural rather than deliberate. A new style gets patterned from a previous sample instead of from the block, the sample carried a small approved deviation, and the deviation is now baked into a pattern that becomes the reference for the style after it. Three seasons of that and the published chart describes nothing the brand actually makes. Pattern every new style from the block and reconcile it to the published chart before sampling.

A repeat order against a controlled fit definition is a reorder. A repeat order against a remembered one is a new development with the calendar of a reorder.

## 12Fit the size set and locate where a derived size fails

The size set puts derived sizes on real bodies so the grade can be judged as garments. Choose the sizes that expose the rule: the base, and both ends of the range at minimum. On a two-dimension trouser grid, add the corner cells, because a rule that behaves well along the middle of the grid can still fail where both dimensions are at their extremes.

When a derived size fails, the pattern of the failure says where the correction belongs. A fault present in every size including the base belongs to the base pattern or to construction, and no change to the grade will repair it. A fault that grows steadily as sizes move away from the base belongs to an increment in the grade rule. A fault in one sample alone is a cutting, making or measuring question until that has been ruled out.

One menswear failure has its own diagnosis. In a waist and leg grid, short-leg and large-waist combinations can need different proportions from the base; they are not simply one body scaled. A rise graded only against waist reads as correct on the specification and sits wrong on the person. If the short-leg cells fail at the top of the waist range, examine front and back rise before touching the length increment.

A second one belongs to the chest-led grade. If the largest tops fit through the chest but pull at the armhole and feel restrictive in reach, the back width or armhole depth increment is lagging the chest increment. That is a grade fault presenting as a comfort complaint, and it will be reported by customers as the garment running small.

Record the conditions alongside the approval: the bodies fitted, what was worn underneath, the fastening state and the measurement method used for each controlled point.
