What does the weight of a fabric measure?

GSM means grams per square metre: the mass of a fixed area of cloth. Fabric described as 180 grams per square metre weighs 180 grams for that area. The measurement allows comparison across different fabric widths, but cannot tell you how much a finished piece of clothing will weigh.

Does heavier fabric mean better quality?

Heavier fabric contains more mass in the same area, which may give it more body or make it less see-through. Better quality depends on how the fabric suits the clothes. The fibres, yarn and way the cloth is made all matter, as does its finish. Extra weight can make a T-shirt too warm or too structured.

Can fabric weight change after washing?

Washing and drying can change a fabric's dimensions and its weight per square metre. Finishing treatments can also change the result. The maker and brand should agree whether the recorded weight applies before washing, after washing or at both stages, so that the sample and the fabric used for production are checked in the same condition.

What should be agreed with the maker alongside fabric weight?

Agree what the fabric is made of, how it is knitted or woven, and what finish it receives. Record its usable width and the condition in which weight will be checked. Set an acceptable range around the target weight with the maker, and keep an approved piece of fabric as a reference for feel and appearance.

The usual measurement is grams per square metre, abbreviated to GSM. A fabric described as 180 grams per square metre weighs 180 grams for each square metre. That gives the brand and the maker a shared number to work with. It leaves several decisions open, including whether the cloth feels soft enough, hangs as intended or gives enough cover.

01Weight measures an area of fabric, not the finished clothes

To measure fabric weight, a known area is cut and weighed, then the result is scaled to one square metre. Because the area stays fixed, fabrics of different widths can be compared on the same basis. A wider roll does not automatically have a higher weight per square metre.

The weight of a finished T-shirt is a separate measurement. The amount of fabric used comes from the shapes cut to make it. Keep the fabric measurement attached to its full unit whenever it appears in the document that tells the maker what to make. A number on its own leaves room for different readings.

Denim may be described in ounces per square yard. This measures the same property in a different unit. Keep the original unit with the approved fabric and add a converted value if needed. The area must stay in the description: an ounce figure for denim does not describe the weight of the jeans.

02A higher weight can add body without improving the clothes

Heavier fabric usually has more material in a given area. It may feel denser, hold a stronger shape or let less light through. These are starting expectations. A fluffy fleece can feel bulkier than a denser knit even when its measured weight is lower.

The job of the clothing gives the number a purpose. A light layer needs movement and breathability, with enough cover for its use. An overshirt needs more structure. A sweatshirt's inner surface matters alongside its weight because the cloth has to give the intended feel and warmth.

Start with a physical reference for the intended clothing and ask for its measured weight. Compare proposed fabrics against that reference in the same condition. A category name such as T-shirt or hoodie does not establish an acceptable weight range. A heavier T-shirt may become too warm or hold its shape more firmly than intended.

Check the proposed cloth in the sample, both on a hanger and when worn. Look at how it falls and whether it gives enough cover. A light colour may need more attention to how see-through it is than a dark colour made in the same way. Weight alone cannot settle that check.

03Fibres and finishing change what the same weight feels like

Two fabrics with the same measured weight can feel markedly different. The fibres affect how the cloth handles moisture and how it returns to shape after stretching. The yarn and the way it is knitted or woven change the surface and how the material hangs.

Finishing adds another difference. Brushing the surface or washing the cloth can change its thickness and feel. Matching a weight and a colour therefore leaves too much unspecified for the maker to reproduce an approved fabric reliably.

A physical reference makes the request clearer. Send a piece of fabric or a whole item of clothing and describe which qualities need to be matched. Name the softness or firmness that matters, and explain how the fabric should fall. Record what it is made of alongside those instructions.

Washing also changes the basis of the measurement. As fabric dimensions change, its weight per square metre can change. Agree whether the target applies to cloth ready for cutting, to the clothes after washing, or to both. A result measured before washing cannot settle whether an after-wash target has been met.

04Fabric weight affects cost alongside width and finish

When the fibres, construction and finish are comparable, heavier fabric uses more yarn per metre and adds more material weight to each item. It can also change how the clothes are cut and sewn, especially where seams become bulky or the finished clothes are washed.

A lighter fabric can still cost more. A specialised yarn or a difficult dye can change the comparison, as can a complex finish or a small run of one colour. The usable width matters too, because it affects how the shapes needed for the clothes fit across the fabric and how much length is used.

Ask the maker to state the fabric choices behind each quote. Compare the usable width after finishing and check that the weight refers to the same stage. Confirm the minimum the maker will run before finalising a fabric choice; that minimum may depend on the colour, yarn or way the fabric is made.

05Approval needs a measured range and a piece of fabric

Fabric weight varies across a roll and between production runs. Agree an acceptable range around the target with the maker, together with how and when it will be measured. The range needs to suit the particular cloth and the performance required of it.

Keep an approved piece of fabric with its measured weight and approval date. Record its fibres, how it was made and its finish. Check the clothing sample after the washing or finishing it will receive, so the approval includes how the cloth behaves in the clothes.

Use that record when checking the fabric made for the full order. If a measurement falls outside the agreed range, investigate where the test piece came from and its condition before deciding what to do. Keep instructions together: a request to use heavier fabric must also update the written target. The number and the physical reference need to describe the same cloth.
